Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
