The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
