Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes
The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
